Check with your local phone company about their data/phone/
texting plans in Croatia (where Dubrovnik is) , and Bosnia and Herzegovina!
(Where Medjugorje is). It may be the easiest way to stay connected, but not the cheapest.
Also, apparently, most iphones in the USA are locked until
fully purchased, which means that the more inexpensive way
of using your phone - buying a sim card, is out of reach
for the time being.....
As of March, 2014, a bill just passed in the House to
unlock USA cell phones, but it now has to pass the Senate.
Another way to go about it, is to buy an unlocked phone -
you can check ebay, walmart,
etc to price them and see if it's worth it...
One of the great things about having an iphone, etc is that
there are a lot of free translation apps ( like itranslate) that
you could use while overseas!..which can come in extremely
handy if you are traveling through small villages,
where most people don't speak English
iPhones!
Rick Steve's offers some extensive great
advice on phones on his website.

Great Translation Apps!
itranslate is the new app I've been
practicing with!
Download it free in the app store
and start practicing!
It's great for if you venture into
smaller villages in France
where not everyone knows English!
There are also a lot of other translation
apps - some that even translate
road signs and menus!
Check with your data plan before you
start to use in in Europe!
As it can use up data quite quickly!

International calling cards
from the USA
If you'd like to call Europe or any other
of your travel destinations while
enroute to Lourdes -
there are some great inexpensive
calling cards, such as this one - offering 1
or 2 cents a minute!
Just go to your local pharmacy, and ask
to see the selection they have.
Make sure to read carefully about
hidden charges...like it's a dollar a call then
1 or 2 cents, etc....
